Hey. I’ve decided to write a book.
Well… actually I’ve decided to draw a book.
Gender equality in modern society, a book of infographics and interviews
Somewhat inspired by the incredibly beautiful work of David McCandless, of whom I recently purchased Information is Beautiful - a real, real, treat (but a challenge to buy, Harrods was the only place in West London that I could find with it in stock, so maybe it’s really popular or just not in great circulation) - it’s going to be a book half made of infographics that specifically explore social inequality, specifically gender equality in modern society (with reference and comparison to the past, and trend based evidence to suggest future progress).
So it’s going to be 50% infographics, and 50% interviews with women discussing the challenges faced in their role within today’s society. It’s something I feel really strongly about and am hugely interested in discovering more. I’m working on it with three other close friends [and potential feminists] which we will initially self publish through Blurb, then approach commercial publishers to see if it’s something that could be opened up to a wider audience. I’m also seeking some political and charitable non-financial backing for the project.
Naturally I will be keeping you posted as it progresses and my journey along the way. I’ve designed pretty high-end books of over 100 A3 pages within my design career in the past, so it’s nothing particularly new to me, but I’ve never worked so heavily on the actual body content myself, so it’s going to be somewhat of a challenge to make it well structured and mean something to readers whilst minimising hideous typographical errors and other such editorial disasters. My intention is to make everything as easily digestible as possible to open a lot of heavy statistical data up to the widest possible audience. I think it’s going to mean something and I’m hoping it’ll have an impact, shake things up, maybe change an opinion or two if it ever gets out there.
Cross your fingers for me?
Do you research this field? Or would you be interested in offering your support to this project through a link to my site, or by discussing it on your blog? Perhaps you would be kind enough to offer an interview for the book? I’d love to hear from you. Or just pop a comment below!
